Hello again and welcome to the seventh edition of our monthly Inside Foos electronic newsletter. We hope that our efforts have helped to provide foosball fans everywhere with a more comprehensive look inside the world of professional foosball. Thanks to the international exposure of the internet, Inside Foos Videos and DVDs have now been watched by players and fans in all 50 states and more than 20 different countries worldwide. Foosball players from Beijing, China to Veszprem, Hungary have now seen Tornado-style foosball played at the highest level. Terry Moore is now a household name in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Well, not really, but you get the point!
This month we look back on the 2003 U.S.T.S.A. pro tour season, a somewhat surprising season which featured three different champions in both Open Singles and Open Doubles at each of the three major tour events. We also witnessed the first-ever three-time Masters Singles winner in 2003, along with the continued dominance of two all-time great lady foosers, and the rise to the top of the most exciting young player to come along in many years. We saw something we'd never seen before in this year's National Open Singles final, and celebrated a world doubles title with two of the sport's most deserving players. 2003 also brought us the bigger and better Texas State Championships, which featured a world class field and some brilliant individual performances, further securing its place as the tour's "fourth major".
In this month's Inside Foos Newsletter we announce our first annual Inside Foos Player Awards and reflect back on some of the highlights of the recently completed 2003 major pro tour season. You can also have a look below at my 2003 Tornado All Pro Teams which were printed in the most recent edition of Table Talk magazine. Our award categories include the top male and female players, along with the most improved and comeback player of the year. We also choose the top 2003 individual performance and the best match of the year.
You can find our usual listings of upcoming events as well, including Bill Maloney's always-spectacular Halloween Open which takes place October 24-26 in "Titletown", Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the legendary Oklahoma State Championships in Tulsa in early November. The fall 2003 schedule also lists the big-money Warrior Indoor/Outdoor Spectacular, being held Thanksgiving weekend at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. This first-time event is offering $200,000 in cash and prizes and should include most of the sport's top competitors. Christina and I will be in attendance, although Inside Foos will not be working the event. Look for me at the blackjack tables or at the seafood buffet.

2003 Inside Foos Player of the Year winner Adrian Zamora of Newark, California narrowly won this year's honor over two-tme 2003 singles winner Todd Loffredo and 18 year old world singles champ Tony Spredeman...
Adrian started the 2003 season slowly (13th, 9th, and 9th at the HoFC) but won the mixed doubles title (with Christina Fuchs) at this year's Nationals in Minneapolis while also finishing second in Masters Singles...
Zamora then put the exclamation point on his greatest season with an Open Doubles world title with Eddy Gartman, while also finishing fifth in both singles and mixed doubles...
Our 2003 Lady player of the Year Moya Tielens, of Vancouver, British Columbia, also won a close race over Cindy Head for the award...
Moya won titles at all three 2003 major events and also won Women's Singles at Texas States...
The talented Tielens earned doubles honors in Las Vegas with Laurette Barton, and singles at the Nationals, and won a second straight world doubles title, this year with Joy Steward...
Although they had a pretty good 2002 season (two major top-5 finishes between them) 2003 Inside Foos Most Improved Player co-winners Mike Archer and Brandon Moreland significantly elevated their games after a dissapointing 2002 Worlds...
They recorded a combined eight top-5 results on the major pro tour, while also winning back-to-back Texas State Open Doubles titles...
As a team Mike and Brandon finished 2nd at the Hall of Fame Classic, 4th at the Nationals, and a solid 5th at the World Championships, along with their two hard-earned Texas State victories...
Other players in the running for Most improved included Mike Philbrook, Billy Pappas, Frank Balecha, and Mike Yore...
The 2003 National Singles final between Todd Loffredo and Rob Mares was easily the 2003 Inside Foos Match of the Year...
Coming from the loser's side, Todd Loffredo won the first set of the final and led 4-1 in the fifth game of the second set, and seemed destined for his second Open Singles title in two 2003 events...
But Mares stopped four championship-winning attempts from Loffredo¹s 3-row, and scored two from his 2-rod as he came back to tie it at 4...
On the final ball, Mares seemed to reach his man back into the goal to make a nearly-impossible, quick-handed save of a loose ball, and then finished-off his amazing comeback by blocking a Loffredo 2-row effort back into the goal...
No one could ever remember the great Todd Loffredo losing after leading 4-1 in the final game of an open final...
Our 2003 Performance of the Year belongs to the amazing Tony Spredeman, who crushed the Open Singles field in a dominating performance at the World Championships, after finishing second in the event the year before...
Spredeman lost a grand total of only three games on his way to the title, defeating three former world champs in the process...
Spredeman beat 1995 champion Dave Gummeson in three games, 3-time winner Frederic Collignon in four games, and 1996 titlist Louis Cartwright twice, both in four games...
After earning only one top-5 result in the previous four seasons, 2003 Comeback Player of the Year Gregg Perrie rebounded with an excellent 2003 season on the pro tour...
"Jeep", who turned 45 in July, finished 3rd in Open Singles at the Hall of Fame Classic, reached the finals in Open Doubles at the Nationals, and tied for 3rd place in the always-tough Masters Singles event...

Bob Furr, the designer of the first Tornado table and Link Pendley, promoter extraordinaire, became the 22nd and 23rd members of the Foosball Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Vegas opener...
At this year's Nationals Rob Mares win over Todd Loffredo was the match of the year, but it was 18 year old Billy Pappas who stole the show with his brilliant play and career-best fourth place finish in Open Singles...
Billy's two-rod shooting in that event was as good as you'll ever see...
Pappas' fellow New Englander Steve Rogge, a semi pro, also surprised the foosball world with a third place finish in Open Doubles at the National Championships with Louis Cartwright...

The 2003 Texas State Championships provided plenty of excitement, but the Open Doubles final between Mike Archer/Brandon Moreland and Tony Spredeman/Amedio Gilmore was a contender for match of the year...
The 2003 World Championships were highlighted by the amazing offensive performance of young Tony Spredeman, and the double-dipping efforts of Adrian Zamora and Eddy Gartman, but let's also not forget the superb play of Louis Cartwright who finished second in both Open Doubles and Singles...
Louisiana's Joy Steward also had the tournament of her life in Dallas, winning Women's Doubles with Moya Tielens while finishing 2nd with husband Matt in the Mixed Doubles event to Frederic Collignon and Cindy Head...
The mixed title was the 11th career World Championship for Collignon (in the past 6 years), and the 33rd for Head, who also won Women's Singles...

FIRST TEAM
TODD LOFFREDO Despite seeing his five year run of World Open Doubles titles come to an end, Todd had an excellent season, winning Hall of Fame Classic and Masters Singles titles while also finishing second in Open Singles at the Nationals.
TONY SPREDEMAN The 18 Year old from Wisconsin followed-up his second place singles finish at the 2002 Worlds with a tremendous overall season on tour. Tony had six top-5 finishes including an overwhelming victory in Open Singles at the World Championship, and event which also saw him place third in Open Doubles and fifth in Mixed Doubles. He also finished second in both Mixed Doubles at the Nationals and Open Doubles at the competitive Texas State Championships.
ADRIAN ZAMORA Adrian capped-off his finest season with an Open Doubles championship at the Worlds with partner Eddy Gartman. ³AZ² also won the Mixed Doubles title (with Christina Fuchs) at the Minneapolis Nationals and placed second in Masters Singles.
FREDERIC COLLIGNON Although he played in only two major 2003 events and had a sub-par (for him) season, Collignon won twice in 2003. He paired with Cindy Head to win both he Hall of Fame Classic and World Mixed Doubles titles. ³Rico² also finished third in the World Singles event, a title he had won in three of the previous four years.
ROB MARES Rob¹s 2003 season featured an Open Singles victory at the National Championships. Mares also had three other top-4 finishes on the major tour and was second in Open Singles at the Texas State Championships.
TERRY MOORE Terry Played in only two 2003 majors but notched five top-4 finishes. Moore earned his fourth career Hall of Fame Classic doubles title with new partner Rick Macias and also won the Texas State singles championship over Rob Mares.
DAVE GUMMESON Dave won his fourth career National Championship, pairing with Tracy McMillin win the Open Doubles title in his hometown of Minneapolis. He also had two other top-5 results.
TRACY McMILLIN Tracy¹s 2003 season included the National Open Doubles title and three other top-5 finishes, including a second place result in Mixed Doubles at the Vegas classic.
CINDY HEAD The amazing Ms. Head played in only two major tour stops but won four times. Cindy won Mixed Doubles (with Collignon) and Singles at both the Hall of Fame Classic and World Championships. Her victories in Dallas gave her a remarkable 34 career world titles, 25 more than the second most-decorated woman.
MOYA TIELENS Moya continued her run of success on the pro tour with three major 2003 victories. She won Women¹s Doubles in Las Vegas with Laurette Barton, and won the Singles title at the Minneapolis Nationals. Ms. Tielens then completed her 2003 season with an World Doubles title in Dallas with new partner Joy Steward.
STAYCE FOWLER Stayce¹s return to the pro circuit included two finals appearances at the Nationals. She finished second to Moya Tielens in a tough Women¹s Singles final, and then bounced back to win the National Doubles title with partner Becky Cherry.
CHRISTINA FUCHS Christina won her fourth career National Championship in 2003, pairing with Adrian Zamora to win the title, while also finishing second in Doubles at the World Championships with Lotus Chesborough.
BECKY CHERRY Becky earned National Women¹s Doubles honors with Stayce Fowler while also finishing second in Mixed Doubles in Minneapolis.
JOY STEWARD Joy¹s breakthrough 2003 season included a World Women¹s Doubles tile with Moya Tielens, and a second place finish in th Mixed Doubles at the Worlds in Dallas. Joy finished in the top-3 in all three major doubles events during a year that saw her move into the upper echelon of lady-goalies.
SECOND TEAM
LOUIS CARTWRIGHT Finished second in both Doubles and Singles at the World Championships and third in Doubles at the Nationals.
RICK MACIAS Won the Open Doubles title with Terry moore in Vegas and finished third with Tony Spredeman at the Worlds.
EDDY GARTMAN Finally won first world title after several finals appearances, pairing with Adrian Zamora to win Open Doubles in dominant overall performance.
MIKE ARCHER Archer¹s finest season included a second straight Texas State doubles title along with five top-7 results on the major pro tour, including second place at the Hall of Fame Classic.
BRANDON MORELAND Brandon teamed with Mike Archer to place in the top-5 in all three major 2003 events while also coming out on top in Texas. Moreland also finished third in Mixed Doubles at the Nationals.
GREGG PERRIE The veteran Perrie had three top-3 finishes on the major tour. Gregg was third in Open Singles in Vegas, third in Masters Singles, and finshed second in National Open doubles with partner Mike Philbrook.
LOTUS CHESBOROUGH Lotus played in three 2003 finals: Mixed Doubles and Singles at the Hall of Fame Classic, and Women¹s Doubles at the Worlds.
LAURETTE BARTON The newly-married Barton (formerly Gunther) teamed with partner Moya Tielens to win a third straight Hall of Fame Classic title in her only 2003 appearance.
THIRD TEAM
FERNANDO ROSA Second in Open Singles at Hall of Fame Classic.
MIKE PHILBROOK Second in Open Doubles at Nationals with Gregg Perrie.
TREVOR PARK Second in Open Doubles at Worlds with Louis Cartwright.
MATT STEWARD Second in Mixed Doubles with wife Joy at World Championships.
SHELLY LANGLEY Six top-5 finishes in 2003.
